Biography of Musical Inventor Joseph H Dickinson

Joseph Hunter Dickinson contributed several improvements to different musical instruments. Hes particularly known for improvements to player pianos that provided better actuation (the loudness or softness of the key strikes) and could play the sheet music from any point in the song. In addition to his accomplishments as an inventor, he was elected to the Michigan legislature, serving from from 1897 to 1900. The Life of Joseph H. Dickinson Sources say Joseph H. Dickinson was born in Chatham, Ontario, Canada on June 22, 1855, to Samuel and Jane Dickinson. His parents were from the United States and they returned to settle in Detroit in 1856 with the infant Joseph. He went to school in Detroit. By 1870, he had enlisted in the United States Revenue Service and served on the revenue cutter Fessenden for two years. He was hired at age 17 by the Clough Warren Organ Company, where he was employed for 10 years. This company was one of the largest organ makers in the world at that time and  made over 5,000 ornate inlaid-wood organs per year from 1873 to 1916. Some of their organs were purchased by Queen Victoria of England and other royalty. Their Vocalion instrument was a leading church organ for many years. They also began to manufacture pianos under the brand names of Warren, Wayne, and Marville. The company later switched to manufacturing phonographs. During his first stint  at the company, one of the large combination organs Dickinson designed for Clough Warren won a prize at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Dickinson married Eva Gould of Lexington. He later formed the Dickinson Gould Organ Company with this father-in-law. As part of an exhibit on the accomplishments of black Americans, they sent an organ to the New Orleans Exposition of 1884. After four years, he sold his interest to his father-in-law and went back to the Clough Warren Organ Company. During his second stint with Clough Warren, Dickinson filed his numerous patents. These included improvements for reed organs and volume-controlling mechanisms. He was not the first inventor of the player piano, but he did patent an improvement that allowed the piano to start playing at any position on the music roll. His roller mechanism also allowed the piano to play its music in forward or reverse. Additionally, he is regarded as the main contributing inventor of the Duo-Art reproducing piano. He later served as superintendent of the Aeolian Companys experimental department in Garwood, New Jersey. This company was also one of the largest piano manufacturers of its time. He received over a dozen patents during these years, as player pianos were popular. Later, he continued to innovate with phonographs. He was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives as a Republican candidate in 1897, representing the first district of Wayne County (Detroit). He was re-elected in 1899. Joseph H. What I ve Learned From Apology - 866 Words

I am Not Sorry (A reflective essay in regards to the three things I ve learned from Apology) Plato is a very influential philosopher who claims to have had an incredible teacher by the name of Socrates. However, due to Socrates lack of writing things down, no one is able to prove if he truly existed or was simply a character in the writings of Plato. These writings are collectively called The Final Days of Socrates which consists of Euthyphiro, Apology, Crito, and Fato. All of these texts explain and demonstrate the Socratic methods and dialects in relation to education. Socrates had a very unique approach considering his cultural surroundings, which was very traditional based. Socrates sought to challenge these traditions by simply asking why they were practiced, which lead to another question, and another, and another, and so on. Throughout The Apology Socrates taught that wisdom can be admitting when you don t know something, questioning everything is good, and seeking to understand the world an d reasons behind things is of high moral value. While there may be many ways to gain wisdom, there are also many ways to display it. For example, during accusations Socrates doesn’t attempt to find some answer pertaining to the accusations of being an atheist and corrupting the youth, instead he simply states that he does not know. He makes it clear that there are many things that he does not know. And there are many things that the government does not know, which during thisShow MoreRelatedThe Problem Of Identity Politics And A Lack Of Leadership On The Left Is Nothing New1102 Words   |  5 PagesThe problem of identity politics and a lack of leadership on the left is nothing new. Roddy Doyle Essay Example For Students

Roddy Doyle Essay Roddy Doyle is an amazing writer and is seen by his friends as a studious-looking and down-to-earth kind of guy. He is one of the new breed of young Irish artists who came of age in the 1960s and 1970s. Roddy Doyle was born in May of 1958 in the northern Dublin suburb of Kilbarrack, Ireland. From Roddy Doyles point of view, he seemed to have had a happy childhood, especially when he told an interviewer, There are memories of my own childhood, running through a field and seeing pheasants fly up, balls of dust under the kitchen table, and my parents happily married. He also said talking about his childhood that The place was mine, and the time was mine. He was raised in a middle-class family, quite different from the gritty, working-class characters in his books. He attended St. Fintans Christian Brothers School in Sutton and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. He continued his education at University College, Dublin, where he achieved a Bachelors degree in English and geography. He undertook teacher training at Greendale Community School, in Kilbarrack, and after getting certified, he became a member of that schools faculty. He taught fourteen years at Greendale, where he was known to his students as Punk Doyle because of the earring and the Doc Martens boots he wore. Doyle is currently married to Belinda Doyle and has two sons, Rory and Jack Doyle. Since 1993, Doyle has been dedicated to writing full time. Doyles first novel came in the 1980s. The novel was titled Your Grannys a Hunger Striker; Doyle said it was brilliant, but after that it went completely downhill. Later in the 80s, approximately 1986, he published the first successful novel of his writing career. The name of it was The Commitments, which, with the help of a friend, he published himself under the King Farouk imprint, and sold himself. One copy of his book landed at William Heinemann, a London-based publishing house. Heinemann enjoyed the book so much he decided to publish it himself in 1987. Two years later, Random House published the book in the United States. This was Doyles big start. After his success he wrote two more novels, The Snapper, and The Van. The Van was such a well written novel that it was a finalist for the 1991 Booker Prize Award. Finally in 1993, success struck again. Doyle was awarded the Booker Prize, Britains highest literary award, for his fourth novel entitled Paddy Clark Ha Ha Ha. Almost without exception, critics hailed Paddy Clark Ha Ha Ha as a brilliantly realized work of fiction. On announcing Paddy Clark Ha Ha Ha had won the Booker Prize as the British novel of 1993, the chairman of the judging committee called the novel funny, humane, and sad. Eamonn Wall called it profound, disturbing, and beautifully crafted. In Paddy Clark Ha Ha Ha there is a lot of humor, and I think its there so I can kick the legs out from under the reader later on in the book, Doyle told Kim Cambpell. Paddy Clark Ha Ha Ha has been my most popular book by a long distance, and I was one of those quite convinced that it would not have a hell of a lot of appeal outside of Ireland, Doyle said during an interview with Karen Sbrockey. When asked by Karen Sbrockey if Doyle was the first Irish person to get the Booker prize and if it was strange, Doyle answered modestly, Yes, and it was just pure luck that I won it. During the interview with Karen Sbrockey, Doyle was asked many questions about his post-writing career, and here are some of the questions and answers. He was asked if ,In his formative years were music and movies and television more of an influence than reading? Doyle answered No, I wouldnt say that at all. I went to the movies a lot but I always had a book in me pocket. When asked if his parents had encouraged him to write, he answered Not activley encouraged, but the house was always full of books. .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f , .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .postImageUrl , .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f , .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f:hover , .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f:visited , .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f:active { border:0!important; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f:active , .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: FedEx Overview EssayI was encouraged to go to university if I wanted. Karen Sbrockey also asked if he had had any formal writing training, and Doyle answered Certainly at the time there was no such thing as a formal writing training course in Ireland. Karen Sbrockey asked Now that you have written five novels, what have you learned about writing? Doyle answered back puzzled, Umm, what have I learned about writing?. I dont know, Ill have to answer I dont know. Roddy Doyle describes himself as one of the guys, and a soccer fanatic. He is said to be studious-looking and down-to-earth with both feet on the ground. He still acts rather like a teacher John Rockwell observed. According to Mary Jordon, His favorite authors are American: Raymond Carver, Flannery OConner, and Anne Tyler, writers who, in Doyles words, are more intrested in the characters than their own cleverness. Truly Roddy Doyle is one of the great Irish writers, one of the new breed of writers who came of age in the 60s and 70s.
