Social Policies Affecting The Senior Citizens Medicare - 550 Words

Social Policies Affecting The Senior Citizens: Medicare (Essay Sample) Content: Social Policy; MedicareStudent NameInstitutional AffiliationMedicareOne of the social policies affecting the senior citizens in America is Medicare. Medicare is a national social insurance policy, run by the federal government of U.S since 1965. It ensures access Americans who are 65 years and above assess health insurance. Medicare also covers young people with an end-stage renal disease and disablement (, 2016). Medicare originally was meant for the individuals serving in the military but after time it was reformed to cater for the elderly. It was informed by the fact that senior citizens are vulnerable because they are increasingly prone to health problems, and they have reduced income. Older people mostly depend on social security pension plans and from family members as their source of revenue. Both of these sources are inadequate to cater adequately for all the needs mainly health related costs. Due to this insufficient income, the elderly are not a ble to receive quality health care leading to increased health issues. It also leads to constrained family relationships since family members are forced to dig deeper into their pockets so as to cover health bills of their elderly family members.Medicare try's to address some of these issues by including some of the charges incurred by the elderly when seeking health care. Medicare covers approximately half of the medical expenses for those enrolled. The other half paid by the enrollee which is usually by personal finance or separate private insurance. Medicare has had successes such as the improvement of the health status of the elderly. Regarding longevity, Medicare had led to life expectancy going up for people at age the of 65 to 17.8 years in 1998 from 14.3 years in 1960. It has also resulted in the reduction to 21.3 percent in 1994 from 24.9 percent in 1982 of the disabled elderly population.Medicare has led to fewer problems with medical bills among the elderly. It has reduc ed family conflicts occasioned by a massive medical bill. Medicare has given the elderly, especially the poor old, a chance to benefit from advances in modern medical technology, like treatment for heart disease and cancer (Davis and Rowland, 1986). Hence it has led to improved health status of the elderly citizens.Medicare has resulted in the increase in seniors under health insurance. Before 1965, approximately 50 percent of the population above 65 years of age did not have health insurance, more than a quarter were estimated to go did not have medical care due to the high cost of health care, (Shakir, 2009). Today, the majority of the seniors can access affordable health care. The change towards the view that health care i...

Biography of Musical Inventor Joseph H Dickinson

Joseph Hunter Dickinson contributed several improvements to different musical instruments. Hes particularly known for improvements to player pianos that provided better actuation (the loudness or softness of the key strikes) and could play the sheet music from any point in the song. In addition to his accomplishments as an inventor, he was elected to the Michigan legislature, serving from from 1897 to 1900. The Life of Joseph H. Dickinson Sources say Joseph H. Dickinson was born in Chatham, Ontario, Canada on June 22, 1855, to Samuel and Jane Dickinson. His parents were from the United States and they returned to settle in Detroit in 1856 with the infant Joseph. He went to school in Detroit. By 1870, he had enlisted in the United States Revenue Service and served on the revenue cutter Fessenden for two years. He was hired at age 17 by the Clough Warren Organ Company, where he was employed for 10 years. This company was one of the largest organ makers in the world at that time and  made over 5,000 ornate inlaid-wood organs per year from 1873 to 1916. Some of their organs were purchased by Queen Victoria of England and other royalty. Their Vocalion instrument was a leading church organ for many years. They also began to manufacture pianos under the brand names of Warren, Wayne, and Marville. The company later switched to manufacturing phonographs. During his first stint  at the company, one of the large combination organs Dickinson designed for Clough Warren won a prize at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Dickinson married Eva Gould of Lexington. He later formed the Dickinson Gould Organ Company with this father-in-law. As part of an exhibit on the accomplishments of black Americans, they sent an organ to the New Orleans Exposition of 1884. After four years, he sold his interest to his father-in-law and went back to the Clough Warren Organ Company. During his second stint with Clough Warren, Dickinson filed his numerous patents. These included improvements for reed organs and volume-controlling mechanisms. He was not the first inventor of the player piano, but he did patent an improvement that allowed the piano to start playing at any position on the music roll. His roller mechanism also allowed the piano to play its music in forward or reverse. Additionally, he is regarded as the main contributing inventor of the Duo-Art reproducing piano. He later served as superintendent of the Aeolian Companys experimental department in Garwood, New Jersey. This company was also one of the largest piano manufacturers of its time. He received over a dozen patents during these years, as player pianos were popular. Later, he continued to innovate with phonographs. He was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives as a Republican candidate in 1897, representing the first district of Wayne County (Detroit). He was re-elected in 1899. Joseph H. What I ve Learned From Apology - 866 Words

I am Not Sorry (A reflective essay in regards to the three things I ve learned from Apology) Plato is a very influential philosopher who claims to have had an incredible teacher by the name of Socrates. However, due to Socrates lack of writing things down, no one is able to prove if he truly existed or was simply a character in the writings of Plato. These writings are collectively called The Final Days of Socrates which consists of Euthyphiro, Apology, Crito, and Fato. All of these texts explain and demonstrate the Socratic methods and dialects in relation to education. Socrates had a very unique approach considering his cultural surroundings, which was very traditional based. Socrates sought to challenge these traditions by simply asking why they were practiced, which lead to another question, and another, and another, and so on. Throughout The Apology Socrates taught that wisdom can be admitting when you don t know something, questioning everything is good, and seeking to understand the world an d reasons behind things is of high moral value. While there may be many ways to gain wisdom, there are also many ways to display it. For example, during accusations Socrates doesn’t attempt to find some answer pertaining to the accusations of being an atheist and corrupting the youth, instead he simply states that he does not know. Roddy Doyle Essay Example For Students

Roddy Doyle Essay Roddy Doyle is an amazing writer and is seen by his friends as a studious-looking and down-to-earth kind of guy. He is one of the new breed of young Irish artists who came of age in the 1960s and 1970s. Roddy Doyle was born in May of 1958 in the northern Dublin suburb of Kilbarrack, Ireland. From Roddy Doyles point of view, he seemed to have had a happy childhood, especially when he told an interviewer, There are memories of my own childhood, running through a field and seeing pheasants fly up, balls of dust under the kitchen table, and my parents happily married. He also said talking about his childhood that The place was mine, and the time was mine. He was raised in a middle-class family, quite different from the gritty, working-class characters in his books. He attended St. Fintans Christian Brothers School in Sutton and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. He continued his education at University College, Dublin, where he achieved a Bachelors degree in English and geography. He undertook teacher training at Greendale Community School, in Kilbarrack, and after getting certified, he became a member of that schools faculty. He taught fourteen years at Greendale, where he was known to his students as Punk Doyle because of the earring and the Doc Martens boots he wore. Doyle is currently married to Belinda Doyle and has two sons, Rory and Jack Doyle. Since 1993, Doyle has been dedicated to writing full time. Doyles first novel came in the 1980s. The novel was titled Your Grannys a Hunger Striker; Doyle said it was brilliant, but after that it went completely downhill. Later in the 80s, approximately 1986, he published the first successful novel of his writing career. The name of it was The Commitments, which, with the help of a friend, he published himself under the King Farouk imprint, and sold himself. One copy of his book landed at William Heinemann, a London-based publishing house. Heinemann enjoyed the book so much he decided to publish it himself in 1987. Two years later, Random House published the book in the United States. This was Doyles big start. After his success he wrote two more novels, The Snapper, and The Van. The Van was such a well written novel that it was a finalist for the 1991 Booker Prize Award. Finally in 1993, success struck again. Doyle was awarded the Booker Prize, Britains highest literary award, for his fourth novel entitled Paddy Clark Ha Ha Ha. Almost without exception, critics hailed Paddy Clark Ha Ha Ha as a brilliantly realized work of fiction. On announcing Paddy Clark Ha Ha Ha had won the Booker Prize as the British novel of 1993, the chairman of the judging committee called the novel funny, humane, and sad. Eamonn Wall called it profound, disturbing, and beautifully crafted. In Paddy Clark Ha Ha Ha there is a lot of humor, and I think its there so I can kick the legs out from under the reader later on in the book, Doyle told Kim Cambpell. Paddy Clark Ha Ha Ha has been my most popular book by a long distance, and I was one of those quite convinced that it would not have a hell of a lot of appeal outside of Ireland, Doyle said during an interview with Karen Sbrockey. When asked by Karen Sbrockey if Doyle was the first Irish person to get the Booker prize and if it was strange, Doyle answered modestly, Yes, and it was just pure luck that I won it. During the interview with Karen Sbrockey, Doyle was asked many questions about his post-writing career, and here are some of the questions and answers. He was asked if ,In his formative years were music and movies and television more of an influence than reading? Doyle answered No, I wouldnt say that at all. I went to the movies a lot but I always had a book in me pocket. When asked if his parents had encouraged him to write, he answered Not activley encouraged, but the house was always full of books. .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f , .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .postImageUrl , .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f , .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f:hover , .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f:visited , .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f:active { border:0!important; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f:active , .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u940a3d2ca151fbcf3fe11301e201b86f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: FedEx Overview EssayI was encouraged to go to university if I wanted. Karen Sbrockey also asked if he had had any formal writing training, and Doyle answered Certainly at the time there was no such thing as a formal writing training course in Ireland. Karen Sbrockey asked Now that you have written five novels, what have you learned about writing? Doyle answered back puzzled, Umm, what have I learned about writing?. I dont know, Ill have to answer I dont know. Roddy Doyle describes himself as one of the guys, and a soccer fanatic. He is said to be studious-looking and down-to-earth with both feet on the ground. He still acts rather like a teacher John Rockwell observed. According to Mary Jordon, His favorite authors are American: Raymond Carver, Flannery OConner, and Anne Tyler, writers who, in Doyles words, are more intrested in the characters than their own cleverness. Truly Roddy Doyle is one of the great Irish writers, one of the new breed of writers who came of age in the 60s and 70s.

The Petticoat Affair Manners free essay sample

Bringing much more necromancy than most would have thought and at the same time a woman who did not fit the mold of the normal submissive political wife in Washington or in Tennessee came to the forefront of public opinion. Mrs. . Eaton was unwilling to stop being her unconventional self and President Jackson was unwilling to stop supporting her regardless of political consequences. She was a threat to the value system of what women should be and how they should conduct themselves both in private and especially in public situations. The Jackson era although change was coming was still regressive in the ole of women and what they were to do in society. Washington and Tennessee society snubbed her. To be socially ostracizes brought Jackson into her corner as his late and beloved Rachel had been cannibalized and victimized by polite society, which he thought caused her death. The author gives a short but accurate biography of President Jacksons life, which lets the reader understand his dependence and loyalty for friends, and his demand for absolute loyalty from his associates. We will write a custom essay sample on The Petticoat Affair: Manners or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Friends were all he had in life especially after Rachel died. Her death made him more protective of women ND therefore a perfect defender of Mrs.. Eaton. Mrs.. Eaton was the daughter of an Inn Keeper, William ONeal where many of the politicians of the day stayed in Washington, D. C. Most male Senators and Congressmen stayed in boarding houses like the ONeal as Congress was in session only part of the year. She had married Mr.. Timberline who was a purser in the Navy, tried to run a store, then later went back to the Navy. Her overt personality coupled with two almost elopements, fueled her reputation which came into question when her husband died on ship and she aired John Henry Eaton. This was done even before the required mourning period had ended. Another inattention to polite society. He had been a boarder at her fathers house and became Jacksons Secretary of War. She was the daughter of a Scot Irish boarding house owner she having never been admitted to society, as John Calhoun stated but when marriage to Mr.. Eaton occurred she wanted entrance to Washington Society. Both her husband and herself wanted admittance to Washington society but were denied it as social rules had been bent or broken and the societys matrons ad to protect their system from the change threatened by Mrs.. Eaton. President Jacksons beloved Rachel was cannibalized and when rumors were circulated about Margaret to keep her out of society and to publicly justify that excel suasion Jackson supported Margaret with much passion. President Jackson saw conspiracy everywhere as he tried to help the innkeepers daughter. Mrs.. Eaton was backed in her attempts to become socially accepted by the President, his friend s, the Globe Newspaper and of course her husband. President Jacksons obsession with Mrs. .Eaton and his ideas hat it was a political conspiracy by Calhoun or Clay put this scandal in a position to almost stop government working that were not concerned with it. His enemies or friends like Van Burden who took advantage of the scandal and Jacksons obsession with it to further his political future fought back and forth completely rendering the administration useless on other important issues of the day. I am amazed at the correspondence the author has retrieved when other topics like the nullification crises was pending yet the President was writing and calling meetings to get acceptance of a lady by Washington society. As the scandal grew it took on Jacksons idea that it had all been created to hurt Jackson politically. His cabinet was eliminated and his government did little during this scandal. He concentrated on very little else in his first term. He went against his Vice President, against Duff Green, against half of his cabinet and still did not get her accepted by society. She had been free with her attentions toward men. Almost eloped twice, married twice, and was somewhat outrageous in her self-promotion in the early sasss. She was ahead of her time and not complacent to wait while society hanged. Her husband continually backed her and the media made it a political struggle especially as Jackson labeled it a conspiracy against his democracy. This was social and political history. Accounts are given from many personal diaries, memoirs, papers, and other minute historical sources. The reader almost sickens as the government comes to a stalemate over whether this lady is accepted or not accepted into society. It appears to be trivial until one remembers the Monica Leninism Scandal which caused an impeachment of a President recently because he had sex with and intern and lied about it.Have things changed or has government always been about power and blocking power regardless of the method. I think the reader is rewarded into being immersed into the Jackson presidency, his alliances, his fears, and his reasons to back Mrs.. Eaton. The history of this period becomes more meaningful as it is personalized. The argument that Mrs.. Eaton represents a threat to the organized expectations of women is put forth but isnt perfect. It seems that her personality and her husbands constant flaring up of the situation makes it a larger media event. The fault may lie with her husband and Jackson democracy. Not all were equal and his insistence of her being a society lady might not have been necessary. She could have not cared and he should have not pushed her rejection to involve the President. My criticism should not be on the characters, though but the book. The author does a thorough job explaining the atmosphere and backs it with much proof. The everyday happenings and letter writings make history able to be found by this author.

Cognitive development - Research Paper Example Teachers can plan lessons effectively and create positive learning environments for their students if they are more cognizant of how people process, learn, and remember information (Blake & Pope, 2008). Piaget perceives learning process from a constructivism perspective, where people get to know through gradual stages by adapting to the environment, while Vygotsky believes that learning occurs through social interaction. As a teacher prepares to teach, there is need to balance the approaches of Piaget and Vygotsky given that learning is both a constructive process and a product of social interaction. Vygotsky upholds the notion that scaffolding, which is the idea that children utilize the help of adults and peers to create a firm foundation that eventually allows them to deal with problems on their
